What does a state of flow look like for business owners?

Sunset in the mountains

As a business owner, it can be easy to fall into the rhythm of the hustle culture.

While some may argue that this is what you need to get up and running, creating a business that’s out of sync with your natural flow state can leave you feeling exhausted and unfulfilled.

Since being a boss is a lifelong learning process, designing a business that feels natural to you can create a sense of ease and joy in the work that you do. Plus, it can allow you to be focused on the task at hand, drowning out any distractions that might come your way.

Why is it important to embrace your flow state within your business?

Have you ever fully immersed yourself in an activity and completely lost track of time? It’s like the doing becomes a meditative experience and there’s a calmness that comes with creating or doing your work.

I feel like this when I’m in the flow of designing or hiking mountains during sunset.

There’s no question on whether you should be doing what you’re doing. It just is and it feels natural to you.

This is what’s described as being a state of flow. In business, whether you’re launching a new service for your coaching practice or creating a course for your students, there’s a sense of joy and ease in your endeavours.

Designing a business that feels natural to you

Stepping into what feels natural isn’t something we’re ever taught. The good news is that your flow state is unique to you, so there’s no right or wrong about it.

Here are three ways to help you identify your flow state in business.

You work in a way that is unique to you

Have you ever done work that feels so natural, that it doesn’t feel like anything special? Sometimes when something comes so easily to you, it can be easy to undervalue it and forget that it’s the very thing that makes you unique to who you are.

Maybe your friends regularly ask you for help to fix something? Or perhaps there’s something you’ve been doing since you were a kid, and you’ve just always been this way.

Look closely, as there are clues everywhere about your unique natural abilities. When you start to incorporate your uniqueness, it can help to reduce stress and bring joy to all aspects of how you serve your clients.

Finding your calm time

If you’ve started your business after many years of the corporate 9 - 6 grind like me, you’ve probably come to realise that there are hours of the day where work flows more and times where it feels like an uphill battle. Think afternoon meetings or a global conference call at 5 pm.  I don’t miss those!

I usually find my mornings are the best time to get the most important tasks of the day done. This is where I can focus my mind free of distractions.

Notice your energy levels throughout your day and find a calm time for you to fully focus on your business.

Letting go and fostering ease

Sometimes as a business owner, you hold onto beliefs that do not serve you. At the beginning of my business journey, I had a belief that client consultation calls would be really hard. I used various scripts or overcomplicated things beyond what they needed to be.

Nowadays, while I have a set of questions to ensure I understand the scope of the project, I fully let go of the conversation and embrace the flow. Some of my consultation calls have gone on for over an hour because it’s been so fun chatting with my clients.

Letting go and letting it be can help create ease and joy around what you’re doing for the day. The key is to find your unique way of being so that you can tap into your flow state as you thrive on your entrepreneurial journey.
